Week 7: Character
He's the kind of guy who hates waking up in the morning. Fights it the whole way through, tossing and turning, hiding under the covers, pretending to still be sleeping to avoid getting out of bed. When he finally gives in to the inevitable, he grumbles while having internal monologues about the injustice of early mornings.
He's the kind of guy who looks like he doesn't care what others think, but spends lots of time primping in front of the mirror, plucking that stray hair, moisturizing the dry skin before going anywhere. If the shirt is wrinkled, it isn't being worn. If there's lint on the clothes, better whip out that lint roller and get rid of it. He owns more pairs of shoes than the woman he shares his life with, and uses more beauty products than her, too.
He's the kind of guy who looks like he never eats enough, but eats constantly. All varieties of chocolates, snacky foods, fast foods, ridiculous foods. After putting every imaginable crappy food into his body, he then suffers from heartburn and pops several tums, but it doesn't stop him from doing it all over again the next day.
He's the kind of guy that can't keep focused on any one thing very long. Doing one thing then leads into doing many, unrelated to what he began doing, only to end up entirely off in space, somewhere, unsure of how he got there.
He's the kind of guy who has more toys than the 6 year old boy in the room down the hall. Action figures aren't toys, they are collectibles. The walls of his bedroom are covered with movie posters; Jaws, Ghostbusters, Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, Terminator. The kind of guy, if summed up based on his belongings, must be a child.
He's the kind of guy that will firmly stand his ground during an argument, only to turn around and do what was asked of him anyway. All the posturing and flexing are just there to make him feel better, because in the end, he is the kind of guy who cares regardless.
He's the kind of guy who talks to animals as if they are going to say something in response. No matter how many times he asks "What did you do? What is that?" and fails to get a response, he just goes right on asking the next time.
He's the kind of guy that has watched way too many movies, and been affected by them. He gets the "creeps" when walking through dark rooms in the house, imagines strange noises, and sometimes even thinks something just might be lurking out there in the shadows.
He's the kind of guy who cuddles for about 15 minutes before deciding it just isn't comfortable, and rolls over shoving his bony ass into the side of the woman laying next to him. When he drifts off to sleep shortly after, he's the kind of guy who twitches in his sleep like a dog dreaming about a chase. And he's the kind of guy who, before the night is over, has managed to make the bottom sheet come off the mattress and has taken all of the blankets hostage.

Nice--very nice. You understand completely the effective use of repetition for both comedy and suspense (the reader keeps wondering what kind of guy he will turn out to be next.) And ultimately you make clear with that list of characteristics that he is no type of guy at all--that is, he's not a type, he's unique.
ReplyDeleteI bet this wrote itself--it reads, anyway, as if it came out quickly and was obviously good as it stood, needing very little touch-up.
Once I decided what exactly I was doing, it really did write itself. Brad had immediately told me after skimming through it that you were going to give me hell over it. Glad he was wrong!
ReplyDeleteWhat did he think I'd think was worth hell-raising about?
ReplyDeleteWell....As much as I hate admitting to being wrong (which I totally was here), I told her that you would probably get on her about the repetition. Which, as we all know, you didn't. You praised her for it. So..there's that.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of intentional repetition, but, like any English teacher, hate reading the same thing written in three different (repetitive) ways just to pad a paper.
